June is Pride Month but organisations should ensure support to their LGBTQ+ communities, both internally and to clients and suppliers, every day not just for the thirty days of June.
Employers and organisations can use this month as a chance to go above and beyond their usual everyday activities, for example, by changing social media banners, holding additional events and so on, however, this is also a good chance to review everyday policies and attitudes.
Review all policies, procedures and mission statements to ensure that they are up-to-date, inclusive and align with the UN standards of conduct. Communicate to employees the consequences of not complying with policies and procedures and continue to create an environment where staff are comfortable calling out unacceptable language or attitudes, and that situations are dealt with promptly.
It can also be helpful in supporting LGBTQ+ employees that all employees are trained and encouraged in promoting inclusivity particularly in casual language (e.g. demonstrating use of ‘partner’ rather than presuming husband/wife when inviting employees to events, for example) as well as the visible use of pronouns in email signatures or bios.
