Queen’s Counsel no more

After the death of Her Majesty The Queen, the UK's elite counsel changed from QC to KC.

All those previously holding the rank of Queen’s Counsel (“QC”) immediately became King’s Counsel (“KC”) upon the death of Queen Elizabeth last month.  According to the Bar Council, they must now use the shorthand KC rather than QC on letterhead and other materials.

The rank is a familiar feature in the Commonwealth countries and is reserved for senior, experienced and highly respected barristers who are appointed by the Crown following a lengthy application.  King’s Counsel enjoy several privileges including front-row seats in court and can demand a higher hourly rate for their services.

I’ve personally worked with Ortolan Legal’s managing director on a number of transactions. Their legal advice doesn’t come wrapped in multiple caveats; it takes account of the commercial realities businesses face. Technically, they are really capable and they’re also highly personable people to work with. They represent real value for money.
