The curious case of the Blackpool Hotel and Trip Advisor - Hotel "fines" customers for writing a bad review

A Blackpool hotel has made headlines this week after “fining” a couple £100 for reviewing the hotel on Trip Advisor as a “rotten, stinking hovel”.

The hotel relied upon a provision in its Hotel Policy purportedly entitling it to charge a maximum of £100 per review for each bad review left on a website. The £100 levy was charged directly to the couple’s credit card two days after leaving the post.

It apparently introduced the policy of charging customers who left bad reviews to prevent customers from defaming the business. However, the hotel has now cancelled the policy and agreed to refund the charge to the customers after Trading Standards warned it could be illegal.

Ironically, the policy has had the opposite effect to that desired as the media coverage has highlighted a string of other poor reviews of the hotel.
