Go Live! Official Court Judgments Database

Live streaming of selected cases from the Court of Appeal (Civil Division) began on the judiciary’s YouTube channel in November 2018 with the aim to improve public access to, and understanding of, the work of the courts.  Further to this objective, earlier last month a new platform for the online publication of court and tribunal judgments also went live via the free caselaw service on The National Archives website.

The new service called Find Case Law which includes new court and tribunal decisions from the superior courts of record – The Supreme Court, Court of Appeal, High Court, and Upper Tribunals, has a number of advantages over previous methods of distributing judgments.  Namely, judgments will be held as live data enabling confidential detail to be redacted as required and will be available for republication under a new copyright regime.
The first version of Find Case Law which went live in April 2022 is still in its infancy and the Ministry of Justice said that in the coming months and years National Archives 'will work with the Ministry of Justice and the Judiciary to expand coverage of what is published and made accessible to the public, including judgments from the lower courts'.   In particular an archive of important historic judgments is due to be uploaded over the course of the next year.

Notwithstanding the future steps to be taken to improve the service there is a clear feel that the online publication is another steps towards transparency in the justice system being a significant improvement on what was available previously which will benefit everyone from lawyers and academics to the general public.

I have worked with Ortolan Legal since 2010 and used their services extensively. They have provided corporate and commercial legal advice and we have also drawn on their capability in the areas of employment law, dispute resolution and property law. What makes them so different is their ability consistently to deliver commercially focussed and high quality advice at a price point which simply cannot be matched by other law firms. They aim to strip out unnecessary overhead costs, concentrate on the quality of their core service and pass on these cost savings to their clients. It works.
